We are a couple who have spent most of our adult lives living and working in developing countries as volunteer workers. In 2020, we returned to Australia to be closer to our children and grandchildren. Our hope was to settle into a small property after many years of travelling, but like many others, we were caught off guard by the rapid rise in housing prices. Even finding a rental proved challenging. Eventually, we were grateful to secure a small granny flat, expecting it to be a short‑term solution — yet five years later, we are still there. During this time, we’ve explored different housing options and became very interested in tiny home living. While purchasing land was out of reach, we recently discovered the possibility of renting land to place a tiny home on, which has opened a new door for us. We don’t have the tiny home yet, but we do have the funds ready to purchase one as soon as we secure a suitable block of land. We are now looking for a peaceful, long‑term land rental in the Newcastle region where we can place our tiny home and finally settle into a space of our own.
